If your stopped on side of road, it's alwaws best to be seen by other drivers so they can avoid you, turn on your flashers.
Try to move your vehicle to the right-hand side of the road out of the direction of traffic.
Stationing yourself on a divided highway's left side is extremely dangerous but sometimes unavoidable.
Do not leave your vehicle stopped in a traffic lane.
Try to get far enough that you obtain the space to open your door without stepping out into traffic, while also being visible enough so that people can see you.

It seems the reason for this is because Summit County is one of the large tourist destinations in Colorado.
